This was my great grandma’s recipe, and my grandma made them for us occasionally when we slept over. This is the type of recipe that has the ingredients jotted down but doesn’t always give the measurements. ?

  • Doughnuts
  • 1 cup sour milk I add 1 tbsp white vinegar to my measuring cup, then fill the rest of the way with the milk. Let sit 5 minutes.

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg

  • 3 1/2 cups flour More for rolling out the dough.

  • Glaze (optional)
  • 1/3 cup butter

  • 2 cups powdered sugar

  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

  • 4 tbsp hot water (as needed)

  • Cinnamon Sugar (optional)
  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 2 tbsp cinnamon

  • Combine the dry ingredients.
  • Add the milk and eggs; mix until combined. Batter will be very sticky.
  • Moderately flour a baking mat. Dump the mixture onto the mat and sprinkle with more flour. You don’t need to worry about having excess flour on the doughnuts; it will add crisp when fried. Roll to about 1/2″ thick.
  • Place the mat on a cookie sheet and chill for 10 minutes. I chill mine in the freezer. This helps with the sticky dough.
  • Heat 2-3″ of oil in a medium sauce pan to 350° or in a fryer.
  • Cut out the doughnuts. I use a 3″ biscuit cutter, then a 2 tbsp medicine cup (what comes with children’s cough syrup). You can also use a canning ring and bottle cap. Honestly, whatever works.
  • Fry about 1 minute per side, until a medium, golden brown. (While these are frying, I stick the remaining dough back in the freezer so it’s easier to handle.)
  • Using a slotted spoon or tongs, remove donuts to cooling rack over paper towels (to absorb the grease)
  • Roll in sugar, cinnamon sugar, or dip in glaze. I love them plain.
