Ingredients
3 1/2 cups flour
1 tbsp yeast
1 1/4 cup milk
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup shortening
1 tsp salt
1 egg
Directions
- Mix 2 cups flour and the yeast in a large bowl or in the bowl of a standing mixer with dough hook attachment.
- In a medium sauce pan over medium low heat, warm the milk, sugar, shortening and salt. (This can also be done in a medium bowl in the microwave, 30 seconds at a time.)
- Add the warmed milk mixture to the flour and yeast. Add the egg. Beat at low speed for 30 seconds then on high for 3 minutes. Stir in the remaining flour and knead until smooth (about 6-8 minutes).* Dough will be sticky.
- Shape into ball. Place in greased bowl and turn to coat in the grease. (I move the dough around in the mixing bowl, spraying the sides of the bowl as I go. This way I only use one bowl.) Cover with a towel; let the dough rise until double in size (45-60 minutes).
- Punch down. Divide in half. Cover. Let rest 10 minutes.
- Lightly spray 9″x13″ pan.
- Divide each half into 12 sections. Shape the sections into rolls and arrange the rolls in the pan. Cover and let rise in warm place until double in size (30-45) minutes.
- Bake in preheated 400° oven for 10-12 minutes until done and medium golden brown on top. Brush with melted butter, if desired.
Notes
- If working by hand, combine the ingredients with a wooden spoon then knead by hand on a lightly floured surface until smooth.
